Lumière !

Cinema is a young art.
It was born in Lyon in 1895 and it started with the filming of a group of workers getting out of a factory.
That factory belonged to the Lumière Brothers, the inventors of modern cinema.
Last week, I was invited to the avant-première of Lumière! L’aventure commence, a film put together and commented by Thierry Frémaux (the director of the Institut Lumière in Lyon as well as the Délégué Général of the Cannes Film Festival), which is out today in French cinemas.
If you are a cinema lover, this is something you can’t possibly miss.
Lumière! Shows 108 movies (completely restored) made by the Lumière Brothers and their camera operators between 1895 and 1905, in France and all over the world. The Lumière bros actually made more than 1400 movies in total, so this is just a small selection of their incredible patrimony.

I have the feeling that when you mention the dawn of cinema, and silent movies in general, people immediately think they are about to see something boring and very ‘has been’, but this is far from the truth and Lumière! is here to prove it.
These 108 super short movies (at that time they could last no more than 50 seconds) are incredibly modern and it is amazing how they already show all the potential of cinema as form of entertainment and art. The witty, accurate and sometimes very funny commentary
by Frémaux guide us through an astonishing amount of different movies: from the family movies shot by the Lumière brothers in their houses and gardens, to the wonderful images taken around the world (Venice, Istanbul, New York, Chicago, even Japan in 1905!), and scenes of ordinary (and yet poetic) life in France: a snowball fight, boys swimming in a clear summer day, men playing the pétanque.
To my disbelief, many of the technical inventions of contemporary cinema were already present in those works: the constraints of the camera movements (they could be just still) obliged the operators to deeply creative filming ideas. Some of them still used today. Basically, the Lumière invented almost everything there is out there to see, even now, with just the extra help of modern technology.
Lumière! is such an enjoyable movie: you laugh, you cry, you marvel watching those images coming from a past that remind us, at almost every sequence, how similar we are to our ancestors.
At the end of the screening, Frémaux talked about the film and he showed us few more short films but, in this case, still to be restored. Wow! What a difference. The brightness, the perfection, the beauty of the black & white were lost without the patient and precious work of the restorers. I sincerely hope they will find the money to save all the movies from their inexorable ruin.

The movie has been followed by a super nice cocktail dînatoire at the Café Lumière of the Hotel Scribe, in Boulevard des Capucines. Well, the place wasn’t certainly chosen at random: back in 1895 it was called Salon Indien du Grand Café and it was exactly where it took place the first public screening of a Lumière movie!
Useless to say, it was full of stars (never seen in all my life such a huge concentration of French actresses all together in the same room) and it was difficult to resist to the temptation of feeling one myself.
This is why I wasn't ashamed to take this picture:

As Frémaux put it so well in the film: cinema is something joyeux, tendre et universel, and it is also, in my opinion, the thing in this world that has more to do with dreams.
So let’s live the dream, until we can!

Indivisibili

Great Expectations

Mi mancava il respiro solo all'idea.
(a parte i soldi, intendo).

Yesterday night I received a message from a friend which subject was: A Vintage Merry Xmas.
I was obviously very curios to read it, but in fact there was nothing to read, there was just a link, and a short movie to see, the one I am posting here for you.
It was a very nice Xmas present, especially because I was completely unaware of this little film.
A Nouvelle Vague thing I didn't know about... pretty incredible!
It is the most improbable nativity you can think of, with Serge Gainsbourg as Joseph, Chantal Goya as the Virgin Mary and a bunch of cool actors from the '60's (like Jacques Dutronc and Guy Marchand) drinking, singing and dancing in a not very religious way.
Apparently, this was shown on French TV on 23 December 1966.
This is something that cheered me up a lot.
As it was the case for almost all the '60's things, there is a freshness, a craziness, a carefreeness, a joyful sense of life that make you feel instantly better.
And who doesn't want to feel good on Xmas day?
I really adored it (thanks, Dexter!).
I think it is the best way to wish all my readers, wherever they are, a Vintage Merry Xmas!!!
Truly yours,
Zazie

Bron

TV series saved my life more than once, I think I already wrote this in my blog.
They simply become my personal kind of addiction when there’s something wrong in my life, when bad or depressing thoughts burden my head and my heart.
In those moments, it is very weird the way a certain series imposes its presence on any others.
Why this one? I don’t know. It is a real mystery, it is one of those tricks you don’t understand and yet work very well.
So I don’t ask too many questions.
I'm having one of those moments, unfortunately, and so I’m eating bread and TV series (and cinema as well, of course, basically I’m going through a cinematic overdose).
Anyway, now I’m watching obsessively a TV series called Bron (The Bridge).
It is a Swedish/Danish production and back in 2011 I’ve seen the first season and really liked it. The plot is quite simple: a police woman from Malmö and
a police man from Copenhagen have to work together to solve a series of killing. The reason why they’re both involved, is that the first corpse is found right in the middle of the bridge connecting the two cities, and so the ‘affair’ is to be split in two. The best thing about this series is the relationship between the two main characters: Saga Norén (played by Swedish actres Sofia Helin) from Malmö is a fortysomething woman suffering from the Asperger Syndrome, a subtle form of autism. Saga doesn’t have any kind of filter: she always says the truth, no matter what, and she has troubles with human feelings. And she is single. On the other side, Martin Rohde (played by Danish actor Kim Bodnia), from Copenhagen, is a big, cheerful even if messy man, and can’t be more different from Saga. Married multiple times, with 5 children, has a human and very often visceral approach to life and work.

The other impressive thing about this series is the atmosphere.
It is the perfect series for winter time.

Apparently, they have always filmed during bad and cold weather and also, very often, at night: there is barely some sun under the
Malmö and Copenhagen skies, and people are constantly wearing heavy coats or shivering in the freezing wind.
It is also the perfect series for Scandinavian design lovers: there are some pretty amazing houses with magnificent furniture to look at.
The credits’ graphic of Bron is centred on the duality which is at the base of the entire series.
Everything is double, here. Two languages, two cities, two policemen, two ways of seeing the world, even two titles: Bron in Swedish and Broen in Danish.

To distinguish them, and also to write the two actors names on screen, they have used a simple sign, this one: I. A line that looks like a bridge.
After the first two seasons, actor Kim Bodnia (if you are familiar with Nicolas Winding Refn cinema, you should recognise this actor’s face: he was in the Pusher trilogy and also in Bleeder) decided to quit. I have no idea why.

In the third season, a new policeman from Copenhagen is sent to help Saga to solve new crimes.
In the first episode, though, this place remains vacant.
And that was the moment when I understood this series was telling me something.
I was looking at the credits of the first episode and the name of the actress Sofia Helin appeared on the screen, which was absolutely normal, then appeared the symbol of the bridge, which was normal too, and then… nothing.

I was mesmerized by this void, and by the cleverness of this idea.
From the second episode, of course, after Helin’s name appeared the one of the new actor.
Only the first episode had that absence.
I don’t know exactly why, but I keep thinking about it. I see the image: the dark tunnel, the vintage green car of Saga running through it, the name of the actress, the bridge sign and then... nothing, nothing at all.
That blank is talking to me, even if I'm not too sure about the message.

So I keep looking at Bron, hoping that void will have a name in my life too.
One day.

Arrival

Is there life on Mars?
Apparently there is, or at least there’s life on some planets in this immense universe and, sooner or later, people living there will come to see us.
This has been one of the biggest fears in human history and one of the most exploited subjects in science-fiction movies since the creation of cinema more than 100 years ago.
There is a bunch of titles that obviously come to mind thinking about this, from the (almost) reassuring version of Steven Spielberg in Close encounters of the third kind and ET, to the frightening one of the Alien series, to the irreverent and crazy exploit of Tim Burton in Mars Attacks!.
From now on, we must add a further view, the one signed by Québécois film-maker Denis Villeneuve: his movie Arrival is, by far, one of the powerful and poignant aliens landing
of cinema history.
Louise Banks, a linguistic teaching in a college, remembers very well the day aliens arrived on planet earth. Suddenly, overnight, twelve immense spacecrafts almost land (they are not exactly touching ground but remain suspended over it) in twelve different parts of the world. One of them is Kansas, and this is where Colonel Weber of the US Forces asks Louise and mathematician Ian Donnelly to go to, in order to understand the aliens language and to decode their messages, hoping they’re coming “in peace”. Time is an urgent matter, because in other places (China, especially), politicians are about to declare war to the aliens, and panic is spreading everywhere in the world.
Louise Banks (Amy Adams) and Ian Donnelly (Jeremy Renner)
I seriously start to believe that Québécois do it better. Cinema, of course.
In these last years, some of my favourite movies have been made by film-makers coming from the Montreal area, and I’m talking, ça va sans dire, about Xavier Dolan and Denis Villeneuve.
Even if extremely different, they both have a very personal and passionate approach to what they film, and the wonderful habit of creating movies that can’t possibly leave the audience indifferent.
They’re talented and they want to make movies in their own way. And I like it!
Villeneuve’s breakthrough was the amazing Incendies, back in 2010, followed by Prisoners and Enemy, both made in 2013, both with stunning performances by Jake Gyllenhaal, so-called thrillers but much more than that. Thrillers with a deep soul, if you know what I mean. In 2015, Villeneuve was in competition at the Cannes Film Festival with Sicario, a breath taking movie about the cartel war on the Mexican border, having as main character a strong yet amazingly vulnerable woman, superbly played by Emily Blunt.

Villeneuve, it is clearer at each new movie, has this tendency to embrace a certain cinematographic genre and to change it from the inside, to spread elements of disturb, to widen the borders of it and go deeper down, where anybody has gone yet.
Arrival is certainly this: it is science-fiction, but just on the surface, because what Villeneuve wants to tell us has nothing to do with it. And there is a scene in the movie that summon up his whole career: Louise going nearer the glass that separates her from the two enormous,
pretty scary aliens, bringing in her hands a panel where she has simply written: HUMAN.
We are human and this is what the film-maker is interested in: why we do what we do, in the way we are doing it? What is the mystery behind our decisions, behind our feelings? And will a new, possible awareness of our future lives, change the way we act?
Arrival also talks about the world we live in: the fragility of our social systems, of the relationships between countries, and the lack of understanding that could so easily lead to ghastly catastrophes.
We need to better understand each other if we want to avoid the worst, maybe it is as simple as that.
And Villeneuve seems to strongly believe in it: the only element that could save this messy world from his destruction is the humanity in us.

And it is not by chance that, in another key scene, the scientist confesses to Louise: "The most amazing thing that happened here wasn’t meeting them. Was meeting you."
Maybe science-fiction will save romance, after all.

Clement Migaud (Mathieu Demy) e Marie-Jeanne Duthilleul (Florence Loiret Caille)

Sorrideva e diceva spesso Merci!
Allora a quel punto l’ho lasciato andare: "Bonne Journée, Monsieur!"
"Bonne journée à vous, Madame!"
Madame???
