Laurence Anyways
Here’s the thing: when I believe in the talent of an artist, I am always afraid of being disappointed by his/her new piece of art or by the fact that other people will not love him/her as much as I do. With Xavier Dolan, I realized this with a certain surprise, I am beyond this point.
When yesterday night I seated at the Cinéma des Cinéastes and I started watching his last movie, Laurence Anyways, I discovered that I wasn’t afraid at all. Why? Because this guy is so talented that I simply knew I didn’t have to worry about anything.
All I had to do was to relax and enjoy 2hoursand40minutes of great cinema.
All I had to do was to relax and enjoy 2hoursand40minutes of great cinema.
I knew it, I had it.
It is 1989 in Montreal, Québec, and Laurence Alia, a teacher of French Literature at the university, is celebrating his 30 birthday. His partner Fred (just the name is male) would like to go to New York for the week-end, but Laurence has something else in mind. As a matter of fact, he’s got something else in mind for years but he makes the announcement just that day: he wants to become a woman. The news, of course, has devastating consequences, not only on their relationship but on Laurence’s entire world. Having taken his decision, Laurence wants to stop pretending: dressed as a woman, he makes the same announcement to his mother and his colleagues and students. A “revolution”, as he calls it, which is going to cost him a lot: the loss of the woman he loves, the loss of his job. The movie follows Laurence and Fred lives until 2000, with their ups and downs, their reconciliations and their lacerations, and their impossible love.
Dolan’s third movie could already be considered as his adulthood’s movie.
Having written his first one at the age of 17, Dolan at 24 shows a remarkable maturity. His cinema has grown up movie after movie, becoming richer, deeper, braver and more inventive. Dolan is full of energy, ideas, boldness, even violence and, on top of all that, he is got an incredible cinematic sense. He is also smart enough to surround himself with great professionals, when he understands he can’t do it all alone. But what exactly this guy is not able to do? Laurence Anyways has been written, directed and edited by him. He even took care of the costumes, to mention one thing.
After a clearly autobiographical movie like J’ai tué ma mère and a love story quite disastrous but also very funny like Les Amours Imaginaires, Dolan pushes here the boundaries of his art: a very long movie (a real film-fleuve), a period movie (were we that badly dressed in the 90's??!) and a heavy, sensitive subject. Dolan clearly wants to impress us and he manages to. Brilliantly. The guy, this is well known, is not lacking in audacity, and on screen this gives flamboyant, amazing results. Visually, there are at least three unforgettable scenes: the New Year’s Eve party attended by Fred (Fade to grey by Visage on the background, la classe 80’s, quoi!), the moment Fred reads Laurence’s book seated on her sofa and the magnificent walk (ah, Dolan’s ralenti!) of Laurence and Fred on the island (am I the only one to have thought about Dolls of Takeshi Kitano looking at this scene?).
Laurence Anyways is not just a nice object, though.
We are immediately taken by the drama the main characters are living through dialogues which sound right, powerful and original. Laurence is a man who loves women but wants to be a woman: could a story possibly be more tragic than this? We have passed, in Dolan’s cinema, from imaginary to impossible loves. And we feel it.
Dolan has been blessed by the presence of two incredible actors: Suzanne Clément (the teacher of J’ai tué ma mere) as Fred and Melvil Poupaud (who replaced Louis Garrell) as Laurence. They, as much as Dolan, are not afraid of anything and have clearly embraced their characters, giving all they could give in terms of tears and blood. In the role of Laurence’s mother, it is a pleasure to see one of the best French actresses, Nathalie Baye (irresistible when Laurence asked her: "Mum, do you still love me like this?" And she replies: "Are you becoming a woman or a bloody stupid?") and in minor roles, we find many of the actors from Les Amours Imaginaires (like lovely Monia Chokri).

Being the first movie I have ever helped to produce (not a big contribution, but decent enough to be invited to the avant-première in Montreal last May), I feel particularly proud.
Whatever you think of this movie you can’t deny that, as everybody is telling to Laurence after his “change”: c’est special!
It’s Xavier Dolan, anyways...

Great Expectations
As you all know, I'm a huge fan of young québecois film director Xavier Dolan.
I have adored his first two movies, J'ai tué ma mère et Les Amours Imaginaires, and I have already dedicated many posts to him.
When, for his third movie, Dolan and the web site Touscoprod launched a subscription to raise money for its production, Zazie, and many other Dolan fans, answered the call and helped to finance the film. The plot was more than intriguing: Québec, during the 90s, Laurence, at his 30th birthday party, announces to his girlfriend and friends that he wants to become a woman.
Well, how could you resist not to help Dolan on a story like that?
The cast was also very promising: Melvil Poupaud as Laurence, Nathalie Baye as his mother, Suzanne Clément (the teacher of J'ai tué ma mère) as his girlfriend and Monia Chokry (the fabulous Marie of Les Amours Imaginaires) as one of his friends.
This week, there was a great surprise: the Dolan site published two different versions of the movie poster and it was possible to see the trailer of Laurence Anyways!
We all hope, of course, that the movie will participated to the next Cannes Film Festival competition, but in the meantime, looking at these images, I can already tell you that I'm feeling EXTREMELY proud of the first movie I have co-produced.
Bravo, Xavier!

Sicilia Queer Filmfest 2011

Zazie d'Or 2010
Forget about Oscars, Baftas, Golden Globes, Golden Lions, Golden Palms, Golden Bears, Césars, or any other Cinema award you can think of. The most prestigious and most exclusive one, the ZAZIE D'OR, is finally back, ready to let you know what was the very BEST of Cinema in 2010!
Ladies and Gentlemen, the winners are...
The Zazie D'Or for BEST PICTURE 2010 est attribué à
LES AMOURS IMAGINAIRES by Xavier Dolan (Québec)
Why? Because I have adored everything about this movie: the plot, the actors, the way is filmed, the music, the costumes. It is intelligent, funny, visually astonishing, super well done and adorable. I cant' get enough of it. This movie casted a spell on me and I'm crazy about it!
But... there was another movie that really enchanted me in 2010. A movie that probably is the antithesis of Dolan's one, but cinema is great also because we can love pictures that are incredibly different with the same passion and admiration. I have then decided to create a special award for it.
The SPECIAL ZAZIE D'OR 2010 est attribué à
DES HOMMES ET DES DIEUX by Xavier Beauvois (France)
Why? Because I have immensely loved how rigorously this movie shows us the (true) story of a group of religious men and the incredible decisions they have to make. The themes of faith, life, death, and the reasons why we are in this world, have been rarely shown on screen as powerfully as in this movie. Chapeau!
The Zazie d'Or for BEST DIRECTOR est attribué à
XAVIER DOLAN for LES AMOURS IMAGINAIRES (Québec)
Why? Because this guy is born to make movies. Can't you see it?
The Little Zazie D'or (BEST FIRST FEATURE FILM) est attribué à
PLAN B by Marco Berger (Argentina)
Why? Because Berger with his first movie reminds us that cinema can be made in the simplest possible way: two men, a room, and an interesting story to be told.
You don't need more than that to make great things happening!
And talking about this movie...
The Zazie D'Or for BEST ACTOR est attribué EX AEQUO à
LUCAS FERRARO and MANUEL VIGNAU
for PLAN B by Marco Berger (Argentina)
Why? Because these actors have created two of the most endearing characters ever seen on screen. We want more real men like them!
The Zazie d'Or for BEST ACTRESS est attribué à
YOON JUNG-HEE for POETRY by Lee Chang-dong (Korea)
Why? Because this korean actress (one of the most famous in her country) is simply extraordinary in the role of an old woman facing dramatic events, and because I think it has been a scandal she didn't receive any award at the last Cannes Film Festival. Shame on the jury.
The Zazie D'Or for BEST SCREENPLAY est attribué à
XAVIER DOLAN for LES AMOURS IMAGINAIRES (Québec)
Why? I have told you: I'm crazy about this movie.
The Zazie D'Or for the BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY est attribué à
GREIG FRASER for BRIGHT STAR by Jane Campion (UK/Australia)
Why? Because the light and the beauty of the images have a very important role in the final, amazing results of this great movie.
The Zazie D'Or for BEST DOCUMENTARY 2010 est attribué à
LA BOCCA DEL LUPO by Pietro Marcello (Italy)
Why? Because once you see this movie, you will never forget it!
The JEREMY IRONS PRIZE (Man of my life Award) for 2010 est attribué à
JAMES FRANCO (American Actor)
Why? You gotta be kidding me... are you really asking me WHY???
Private message to Mr. Franco: the only way to receive this prize is actually to knock at my door, James. So: the sooner, the better! Sincerely Yours, Zazie
Zazie would like to thank Sergio "Saccingo" Tanara, the creator of the Zazie D'Or drawing. If you want to know more about Saccingo, please visit his sites:

When Zazie met Xavier
I live in a city where incredible things can happen.
Yesterday night I went to the housewarming party of Alex, a dear friend of mine. He shares an apartment together with 3 or 4 other people in Boulevard Magenta and each of them invited at least 40 friends. The result, as you can easily imagine, was a big mess. I love this kind of parties, where you talk to completely different human beings and you can meet amazing characters. I also love to look at the way girls dress at these parties, because you could see some very cool stuff. Yesterday night I have noticed a girl having a fabulous 50s bag and fabulous 50s glasses, and I stopped her in the middle of the living room to say that I loved her style. I told her: you look like the girl in "Les Amours Imaginaires", the film by Xavier Dolan, did you see it? She thanked me for the compliments and she said that yes, she knew the movie and she liked it a lot. And then she added: You know, there is a guy at the party who really looks like him! But then there was such a mess that was impossible for her to find him. I mentioned this to my friend Gianluca, who loved the movie as much as I do, but it was too crowded even to recognise our own friends, so we gave up the research.
Few hours and many glasses of champagne later, I saw Gianluca rushing towards me. He looked very excited but also very serious: I have something to tell you. I just met Xavier Dolan, he is in the kitchen. I looked at him in disbelief: What do you mean, you just met Xavier Dolan? I swear, he is there, he answered. I could hear Gianluca’s voice telling me something else, but at that point I was already marching through the kitchen, an almost impossible mission considering the number of people around me. I really thought that my friend bumped into the clone of the film maker and, as a matter of fact, I saw this Dolan-look-a-like in the corridor, but then I was very closed to the kitchen, and so I decided to have a look anyway.
And I found myself in a movie.
The scene was exactly the same one at Nicolas party in Les Amours Imaginaires: I could hear Jump Around by The House of Pain in my head, while I was walking in slow-motion through the kitchen to reach Xavier Dolan, who was actually there, standing near the fridge. The 50s style girl was two steps away from him. We looked at each other, both mesmerized. Her eyes seem to say: Hey, do you see? There is the clone... and even the real one! We smiled, très complices. I introduced myself to Dolan, who was stunningly gorgeous in an elegant black suit: Hi, I’m Zazie, I can’t believe I am meeting you.
He smiled, politely. I am one of the co-producers of your next movie.
Sorry? What did you say? I repeated it. And then he seems very surprised: Oh, really? You did that on Internet through Touscoprod? Thank you!
You’re welcome, I am crazy about your movies. He smiled again. While talking in French, I realized I was using the vous, and then I felt ridiculous, because I am 20 years older than this guy, so I advised him that I was about to use the tu (how can I manage to say such stupid things in moments like that?). I told him I knew he was in town because of the Festival du Cinéma de Québec, I told him I had a cinema blog and that I wrote about him a lot and then I looked again at him: you know, I really can’t believe this is happening. I’m so happy. I guess he was a bit embarrassed by my enthusiasm, so to convince him that I was serious, I added: I think you’re a genius!
It was then that I heard another voice and that I saw somebody else standing near him: Xavier doesn’t like to hear that. I looked at that voice: I beg your pardon? I realized there was this friend of him who was trying to protect Dolan from the assault of possible fans. He explained me that they wanted to be quite, there, without people making much of a fuss about his presence. That was exactly what I was doing. I said: you don’t have to worry, 85% of guys and girls here are architects, and believe me, they don’t know who Xavier is. As a matter of fact, while I was talking to them, nobody tried to approach Dolan and I couldn’t see a line of screaming fans behind me. As usual, I was the only screaming fan in the place.
How long are you staying in Paris? I asked Xavier. This is my last night. I have a plane early tomorrow morning for Montreal.
Oh, I see. The other guy told me: this is why we have to go now.
Oh, ok. I shacked my hands again with Xavier, we smiled and then we all tried to reach the corridor. I really don’t know how me made it, since the number of people at that stage was behind human comprehension. But we did.
Gianluca came to see me, asking me all the details of our meeting.
But I couldn't hear what he was saying, because Dalida was singing Bang Bang to my hear in a very loud voice.

Les Amours Imaginaires (the second time around)

No, non proprio.
