Zazie d'Or 2010

Forget about Oscars, Baftas, Golden Globes, Golden Lions, Golden Palms, Golden Bears, Césars, or any other Cinema award you can think of. The most prestigious and most exclusive one, the ZAZIE D'OR, is finally back, ready to let you know what was the very BEST of Cinema in 2010!

LES AMOURS IMAGINAIRES by Xavier Dolan (Québec)
Why? Because I have adored everything about this movie: the plot, the actors, the way is filmed, the music, the costumes. It is intelligent, funny, visually astonishing, super well done and adorable. I cant' get enough of it. This movie casted a spell on me and I'm crazy about it! 

But... there was another movie that really enchanted me in 2010. A movie that probably is the antithesis of Dolan's one, but cinema is great also because we can love pictures that are incredibly different with the same passion and admiration. I have then decided to create a special award for it.

DES HOMMES ET DES DIEUX by Xavier Beauvois (France)
Why? Because I have immensely loved how rigorously this movie shows us the (true) story of a group of religious men and the incredible decisions they have to make. The themes of faith, life, death, and the reasons why we are in this world, have been rarely shown on screen as powerfully as in this movie. Chapeau!

Why? Because this guy is born to make movies. Can't you see it?
The Little Zazie D'or (BEST FIRST FEATURE FILM) est attribué à
PLAN B by Marco Berger (Argentina)
Why? Because Berger with his first movie reminds us that cinema can be made in the simplest possible way: two men, a room, and an interesting story to be told.
You don't need more than that to make great things happening!
And talking about this movie...

Why? Because these actors have created two of the most endearing characters ever seen on screen. We want more real men like them!

YOON JUNG-HEE for POETRY by Lee Chang-dong (Korea)
Why? Because this korean actress (one of the most famous in her country) is simply extraordinary in the role of an old woman facing dramatic events, and because I think it has been a scandal she didn't receive any award at the last Cannes Film Festival. Shame on the jury.

Des Hommes et des Dieux

Io al prossimo che si permette di dire che il cinema è un’arte minore, lo giuro, gli sputo in un occhio. Oppure, più magnanimamente, lo porto a vedere il film Des Hommes et des Dieux di Xavier Beauvois, Gran Premio della Giuria all’ultimo Festival di Cannes, e mio personale coup de coeur di questa rentrée (e pure di tutto il 2010).

Des Hommes et des Dieux prende spunto dalla storia (vera) di alcuni monaci trappisti francesi che, nel 1996 in Algeria, sono stati prima rapiti e poi uccisi da un gruppo di terroristi. E dico prende spunto perchè in realtà la storia che ci racconta il film non è quella del loro massacro, che infatti non si vede, ma piuttosto della loro vita di tutti i giorni prima che il dramma avvenga. Una vita semplicissima, come ci si aspetta da dei monaci, fatta di lavori manuali, preghiera, canti, incontri cordiali con la gente (di fede musulmana) del villaggio sperduto in cui si trova il loro convento. La serenità della loro esistenza, tuttavia, è minacciata dalla situazione caotica nella quale si trova il paese. Non si capisce chi sia peggio, se i terroristi o i militari, fatto sta che i monaci cominciano seriamente a temere per la loro incolumità. Qualcuno di loro se ne vuole andare, altri vogliono rimanere, ma a poco a poco, anche alla luce degli avvenimenti esterni, i religiosi si convincono che l'unica scelta per loro possibile è quella di restare ed affrontare insieme il loro destino.

Film rigorosissimo, misurato, monacale, e non a caso, anche nella purezza e nella semplicità delle immagini, Des Hommes et des Dieux è un'opera che conquista il cuore pezzo per pezzo. Basta poco per far capire un mondo (e il senso di parole come accettazione, integrazione e rispetto): il Corano posato sulla scrivania di Padre Christian insieme ai testi sacri cristiani, i monaci che quando si aggirano in paese lo fanno sempre in abiti civili, la pazienza e l'amorevolezza con cui Padre Luc cura i poverissimi che si presentano al suo dispensario. I religiosi sono prima di tutto uomini: fragili, dubbiosi, spaventati. Di fronte ad un nemico armato, nessuno di loro ha il minimo desiderio di comportarsi da eroe. E tuttavia hanno un compito, al quale sanno di essere chiamati dalla loro fede. La forza del film sta in questo: nel mostrare con tanta chiarezza, serietà ed umanità, questa presa di coscienza. Ci sono due scene indimenticabili, delle quali non vorrei dire molto per lasciarvi intatto il piacere di scoprirle, dove questo percorso diventa una magnifica (anche dal punto di vista cinematografico) evidenza. E bellissimi sono pure i dialoghi, con alcune folgorazioni, come il breve monologo di Padre Luc: "Non ho paura dei terroristi, tanto meno dei militari, e non temo neppure la morte. Sono un uomo libero".

Gli attori, ovviamente, sono parte fondamentale di questo piano divino. Lambert Wilson nella parte di Padre Christian, il "leader" del gruppo, si prende qui la rivincita di tutta una vita, quella passata a convincere gli altri che, oltre ad essere un bell’uomo, è pure un bravissimo attore. E' stato poi un piacere ritrovare Philippe Laudenbach, una faccia nota per chi ama il cinema di Alain Resnais (ma è stato anche Maitre Clement in Vivement Dimanche di Truffaut), bravissimo come sempre, e scoprire il tenerissimo Jacques Herlin nella parte del monaco più anziano, Padre Amédée. Ma nessuno può competere con la bravura, lo charme naturale e la sottile vena ironica di Michael Lonsdale, un attore che non a caso ha lavorato con i più grandi (Truffaut, Eustache, Resnais, Rivette, Bunuel, solo per citarne alcuni) nella parte di Padre Luc, il medico del villaggio. Tutti straordinari.

Questo è un film su dei veri eroi dove di eroico, retorico, lacrimevole, d'effetto o scontato, non c'è niente. Des Hommes et des Dieux è un film capace di far nascere la fede in chi lo guarda.

Se non in Dio, di sicuro nel cinema.
